The photos at right and below were taken in 2007.  The one at right shows the outer entrance as seen from within the outer ward and looking out.

Below, the next gate is protected by a recreated portculus.  This is not an authentic early item, but still provides a good idea how the portculus works.  The best designed portculus is one that is installed within the walls so that the frame and mechanism are protected from attack.
